Design & Technology
D&T at Whixall C.E. Primary School
Intent
At Whixall CE Primary School we intend to build a Design Technology curriculum that is inspiring, rigorous, and practical. We want our children to use creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. We aim for our children to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills, and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum and create strong cross-curricular links with other subjects. Our coverage in Design and Technology helps to prepare our children, by giving them the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they need to be successful in later life.
Implementation
We are dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high-quality Design and Technology curriculum.
This is implemented through:
- A well-designed whole school, two-year rolling programme of the DT curriculum which allows for progression across year groups in all areas of DT. To ensure progression and rigour, we use the Design and Technology Association’s ‘Projects on a Page’.
- Well-planned and resourced projects provide children with a hands-on and enriching experience and ensure cross-curricular links with topics.
- Each project from Year 1 to Year 6 addresses the principles of designing, making, and evaluating, and incorporating relevant technical knowledge and understanding in relevant contexts.
Impact
The children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in design and technology that they will then apply to other curriculum areas. They enjoy sharing their work together and learning from each other. Design and Technology encompasses many cross-curricular links and children are able to apply what they learn in other areas of the curriculum and in opportunities out of school and within their lives. We measure the impact of our curriculum through reflecting on standards achieved against the planned outcomes, discussions with children about their learning, and through collaboration of teachers, and the subject leader through monitoring and lesson observations.
